If there was a Museum Of Dance Music, Ashley Beedle would surely have a big hall just for himself. The enormous amount of remixes by this many-faceted individual could feed a blog of its own. Because I'm such a lazy lizzard, I'm loving especially his non-house and downtempo line of work which is contained on this fine double disc collection. And yes, there will probably be a sequel dedicated to his four-to-the-floor work sometime in the near future (if there will be any), so don't bother asking ;-)

"Dood, what happened to you??? Are you okay? Do we need to bail you out of an armenian prison? Or are you joining Fila Brazillia as a roadie/stylist?", wrote Kevin and as I keep getting concerned emails and comments in very much the same vein, I think it's about time to offer you some explanation of the 7 weeks gap, unheard of even in the history of this blog, well known for it's slow pace.

You my readers know that I usually don't mix personal issues with blogging, so let's make the long story short. The year 2011 was undoubtedly the worst year in my professional career as well as in my personal life. Probably as a result of the economic crisis most of my clients went out of business or had to cut the marketing budgets drastically, which in effect turned me from moderately successful graphic designer to a penniless loser close to eviction and with limited access to the net.

Being 12 months without a proper job is something I haven't experienced in my whole life. Surely it beats an armenian prison but only barely. I'm truly addicted to work, so the lack of it really wears me out and gets me down. But whichever work the devil has found for my idle hands, it's not blogging. Not that there wasn't enough material for posting (like a couple of essential addendums to the Dorado batch) but as a result of my personal quagmire somehow I've just lost all the creative energy and drive.

Anyway if you happen to have any use for skilled and experienced graphic designer with an impressive portfolio, do not hesitate to contact me.

Recently I've put all my net money into the RS account to maintain at least some continuity but frankly, I have no idea when or if I'll ever be in postion that would allow me to post some more of the choons we all love. The Howie B. remix collection you'll find below is the last release on FVV label and this blog, at least for the foreseeable future. So enjoy this X-mas present and if you feel like some charity and want to support the author, please consider using the Donate button, the eternal blind spot of this blog.

Here comes the second and probably the last of the Future Vintage Vaults releases - a double disc collection of remixes by Howie B(ernstein). There isn't much to say about this guy that you don't already know - a studio knob-twiddler who miraculously became friend to the stars while keeping his underground rep as a Godfather of trip hop and head honcho of the legendary label Pussyfoot. Of course this collection is far from complete as I've focused just on the works that fit within the boundaries of Future Vintage era. Stay tuned!

Welcome to Future Vintage Vaults!

Sorry about the recent gap. I had to take some time off to recover from my birthday weekend and to learn to cope with the fact I'm not thirty something anymore. And as the stat counter showed the 200.000th happy customer, it was also a good time to gather my thoughts about the future of the Future Vintage.
What really got me started was an unwanted b-day present in the form of this stupid "compilation" of tracks all stolen from my blog by certain Vrec. No taste, no design, no shame, no nothing. Gosh, he'd even had the guts to steal my box! An not a word about my blog, of course...

I've been thinking about some improvements for some time and this piece of shit finally made my thought lego click. Fact 1/ my own compilations and mixes are the most downloaded files. Fact 2/ I've got a passion for good remixes and those bottomless boxes to choose from. Click!

So let me introduce Future Vintage Vaults, my own bootleg netlabel, specialized in remix collections and all things unusual. Shortly, the FVV releases will be something that could never have happened in the real world due to licensing problems. Because I'm that soo 90's guy, the releases will come in the form of classic 80 minutes CDs, will contain material that roughly fits into Future Vintage timeframe, will be gathered from quality sources and will include original artwork in high resolution.

First two volumes are ready to go and about 10 more are in the making. I hope you'll like the first release in the post above and will come back to me with some usefull feedback.

That doesn't mean I will stop posting regular records from my collection, so don't worry about your requests. The fact is that it gets harder to post something really outstanding, new blogs and download sites pop up everyday and many albums I've prepared for Future Vintage happened to appear elsewhere before I had the chance to post them.

Skalpel - Polish Jazz EP (1999 promo CD-R)

No need to introduce Skalpel, the polish DJ couple that helped Ninja Tune to maintain the rest of the real Ninja sound with their 3 albums of dark breaks and samples from Polskie Nagrania series Polish Jazz, obscure to the world outside Poland until then. I'm not sure about the dating, Discogs say 2000, the felt tip on the disc says 1999. Given to me in May 2000 by DJ Vadim's tour manager, he had a box full of them, so it's no surprise that one of those found its way on Ninja Tune's A&R desk. I've added my favourite Sculpture videoclip for your viewing pleasure.

Jamie Myerson released this double-sided single on Arista owned electronic label Sm:)e Communications in 1997. I found it while I was digging for his second album Sky City Lift Me Up (not mentioned on Discogs, wow!), recorded after his departure from Columbia. Contains four tracks of smooth drum'n'bass and breakbeats acceptable at any time.

Renegade Soundwave - Positive Dub Mixes (1995 Mute)

Back in 1988, Renegade Soundwave didn't appear to be more than just another grebo crew doomed to perrish after first album. Somehow they persisted that period and became an icon of british club sound, call it house, big beat, dancehall or whatever you like. This remix EP contains six versions of the single Positive ID from their second eponymous album. Three of them produced RSW themselves (Positive Mindscape was also released on their final release The Next Chapter Of Dub), two were treated by Ashley Beedle, who delivered really laid-back versions, and one by french producer Bertrand Burgalat.

Let's continue the short-players excursion, today in a rub-a-dub style. We've already had African Head Charge on Acid Jazz, so let's start with their full blooded On-U Sound release. This EP followed their seventh (and IMHO their best) On-U Sound album In Pursuit Of Shashamane Land and contains relaxed remix of Somebody Touch I, two extra tracks and, as a surprise, remixed version of Hymn from their 1990 album Songs Of Praise. No cover art again, please don't complain. If there will be some donations, I promise I'll consider buying a scanner again.

As it seems, it was released in fancy foil pack, while my promo copy came in plane paper sleeve.

Mr. Scruff - Large Pies EP (1997 Cup Of Tea)

One of the first releases of my favourite beatmaker Andrew Carthy AKA Mr. Scruff confirms that years he had spent at studio mixing desks producing and remixing other artists were worth the wait. Large Pies has that characteristic minimalistic crunchy pre-Ninja sound similar to his self-released unnamed debut album (we may get to it later). For some reason the dicogs offer only white cover with black drawing (by Mr. Scruff himself of course) while my copy is black with white drawing.

Jailbird was the third single from Primals' long awaited and then critically murdered fourth album Give Out But Don't Give Up and first to really catch up thanks to this great EP of remixes by The Dust Brothers, Kris Needs and The Sabres Of Paradise. While the first two gained Jailbird a place on every good big beat compilation, my fav is the slowly rising atmospheric organ in Andy Weatherall's stripped down Sweeney 2 remix. Where were you when JFK was shot? Where were you when man walked on the Moon? These were the questions of my parents' generation. The question of mine definitely is: Where were you in 9/11?
I remember clearly watching those CNN pictures with my friends, our slack-jawed faces in the blinking TV light. Being fairly trained by catastrophic movies of all kinds, we would accept the alien invasion rather than the picture of the Twins going down.
Sure, there were victims, thousands on that September morning and thousands more in wars that followed, righteous or not. But I'm writing this to commemorate one more victim, perhaps not bloody or cruel, but important nevertheless - the Nation Records.

VA ...And Still No Hits - The Story So Far (1997 Nation Records)

Back in the 90s, the world was a lovely place to be. People believed in multi-culti and exotic influences in music were always welcome. The success of Transglobal Underground helped to establish London's Nation Records as the major stable for Middle East inspired artists in the UK and worldwide. Although many of Nation artists had prety radical views, both political and religious (Asian Dub Foundation, Fun-Da-Mental), their music was the sound of any good tea room and coffee shop on both sides of Atlantic. However, after 9/11 the demand for anything from Middle East dropped drastically (except for oil, of course) and Nation Records experienced deep decline. Actually only two albums and two compilations were released after 2001.
...And Still No Hits is a 2CD compilation showcasing Nation Records at it's peak, a label with many commercially successful artists and great distribution deals. No matter if you're drum'n'bass, dub or techno fan, I'm sure you will find some tracks that will make you happy.

The belgian singer Natacha Atlas was an important figure in the rise of Nation Records and her talent was often exploited by variety of non-Nation artists including Jah Wobble, Mick Karn, Jean-Michel Jarre, David Arnold, Danny Elfman, Nigel Kennedy, Nitin Sawhney and even Juno Reactor. The TGU-produced Diaspora was her first solo album and IMHO the best.

The Quiet Boys - Dazzle (1996 2 Kool) Ultra Edition (1998 Thin Air)

The Quiet Boys debuted with the gorgeous Can't Hold The Vibe on Acid Jazz in 1992, then Mick Talbot decided he's got better things to do (like recording another tiresome album with another ex-Counciler Steve White) and their second JAZID Bosh! wasn't half as good. For The Quiet Boys second coming on 2 Kool, Bangs picked young keyboard player Neil Cowley (later he played all the great keys on Zero 7 first album and I recommend his solo instrumental projects Pretz or Fragile State). Dazzle could have been an acid jazz classic - if it was released in 1993. In 1996 it was hardly more than cannon fodder for smooth jazz radios. This Ultra Edition was re-issued on Bangs' own label Thin Air in 1998 and "enhanced" with the drum'n'bass version of Everybody Loves The Sunshine and The 13th Sign bangin' remix of Bosh Tres Bien.

The roots of the first Yada Yada album Subculture are in sessions with Mick Talbot recorded after their initial project The Quiet Boys finally departed from Acid Jazz in 1996. Some of those mellow funky jazz tracks were released under the name Soundscape UK in the US (we'll get to it later), some on Yada Yada's Subculture. Anyhow, the tempo is relaxed and Mick Talbot's rhodes and wurly remind the days of The Style Council. Post acid jazz?

2 Kool albums evening! If we exclude the sadly lost album C'ést Trés Bong by scandinavian trip hop junkies James Bong, all that's left is a material produced by a single person, certain Mr. Christopher Bangs.
Chris Bangs is a notorious figure of early acid jazz scene having taken part in foundation of both Acid Jazz and Talkin' Loud labels. Since the late 80s Bangs produced and remixed loads of artists, including the groundbreaking In Pursuit Of The 13th Note album by Galliano. Later he started releasing his own tracks as Bangs The Bongo until he was introduced to Mick Talbot, the guy who taught Paul Weller love jazz. Together they formed a production duo known under the monickers of The Quiet Boys, Soundscape and Yada Yada.
Bangs first release on 2 Kool though was his solo trip hop project Mr. Electric Triangle and its sole album Kosmosis Of The Heart. The sound of Mr. Electric Triangle is intrumental hip hop with some acid jazz echoes, sweet vocals (Anthea Clarke known from another Bangs project The 13th Sign) and rapper Fabian, a collaborator of many early Ninja Tune artists. My fav is A-L'uomo with helter-skelter drums and spacey moog solo.

Marc Moulin was one of Europe's best jazz players and I deeply admire all his 1970s fusion jazz works either with Placebo or solo. Unfortunately I can't say the same about his reincarnation into Giorgio Moroder-style disco producer with his project Telex. From today's point of view, Telex spearheaded the dance music avandgarde, no doubt about it, but (I just can't help it) where others have fun, I see a talent lost to jazz music. That's the reason why I've got no Telex albums except this remix collection, where Telex hits get treated by today's electronic artists including Carl Craig, Ian O'Brien, Dr. Rockit, Glenn Underground and many others.

I have to admit that Aquasky were my d'n'b heroes, I had to have all of their early Moving Shadow platters and their radical style shift on the debut album Bodyshock was actually Mindshock to me. Orange Dust is a bit schizophrenic mini-album put together from material recorded during their year-long stint on Polydor-owned label Passenger. There's some cool atmospheric d'n'b (Opaque, Orange Dust, Plane Invaders), some fine uptempo trip-hop (Universe) and also some dubious hip hop experiments with weak rap and excellent turntablism. This edition also includes remixes from the single Raw Skillz/Opaque.

By any means another ordinary late 90s product - until you start digging who's behind that stupid project name, and you find it's certain Simon Climie (yes, of Climie-Fisher fame) and Eric Slowhand Clapton under X-Sample moniker. This information swept my mind clean except for one question: why? But anyway, DJ Pulse's remix of Rip Stop is still one of my fav d'n'b tracks.

The name of Washington DC based producer Eric Hilton should raise some attention just for him being half of the styleseting duo Thievery Corporation. Peace Bureau was the most interesting of the projects he's been involved before. Released in 1997, Inner City Booms contains mostly material recorded in 1994 and 1995. While some tracks already have that distinctive Eighteenth Street Lounge sound (Missions For The Money, Kali, Away), the rest can't hide their roots in that typical US hip hop jazz. If you're fan to bands like The Jazzhole or early Guru's Jazzmatazz, Peace Bureau is your choice.

Spiritual Vibes were japanese casio jazz crew led by Nobukazu Takemura before he went all electric. Their eponymous debut album, later licensed to Toy's Factory, is a mixture of live club jazz, tender girlie vocals by a singer called Kiku (Kikuko Nonaka), and those casios. Although Takemura produced their second album Kotoba No Mae (or Before The Words in english version), they went almost all accoustic and the magic of their debut was somehow lost.

Groove Theory - Groove Theory (1995)

Everytime I hear their debut album, I try to guess what makes Groove Theory more interesting than the rest of numerous downtown NYC r'n'b swing groups. Groove Theory were a duo of singer Amel Larrieux and skilled studio producer Bryce Wilson, an ex-member of the electro breaks supergroup Mantronix and a cousin of certain LL Cool J. Their only album is full of really catchy tunes and Amel's voice is most of the time the only melodic element here. Take it away and you'll get that punding raw and minimalistic fat hip hop beat typical for East Coast hip hop sound. Give it a chance, you won't regret.

Their second and last album There Is Enough For Everyone sounds in very much the same vein, deep hypnotic downtempo dub with (sometimes too) dominant effected guitar and haunting vocals reminding me of Curve's Toni Halliday. If you enjoyed the intrumental version of Gobi Underwater on this Planet Dog compilation, you know you can't go wrong.

Although the DC in DC Recordings stands for Depth Charge, unlike the label's owner J. Saul Kane, Tom Tyler is no nihilistic breakbeat terrorist. I first noticed his name when he remixed The Cinematic Orchestra's Channel One Suite and kept my eye on him since then. His debut Asleep At The Switch is jazzy breakbeat trip through twisted soundcapes. A must-hear for those who miss that classic Ninja Tune sound because Tom Tyler picked it up where they lost it. Future Vintage at it's best.

Waiwan was one of the prodigal sons of Manchester trip hop and nu jazz scene of the 90s that gave us so many great artists, starting with Aim and ending with.. ehm, Waiwan. His only self-produced album Distraction was released on short-lived Autonomy label, whose roster included only him and The Philadelphia Bluntz (will post their album Blunted At Birth soon). The lack of strong distribution channel probably caused that it was soon forgotten despite his huge single hit Goddess. Which is a shame because Distraction is a small gem packed with fat beats, deep and dark soundscapes and enchanting vocals (featuring Veba, The Muse of Manchester music producers). If you enjoyed the Grand Central albums posted here earlier, I swear you'll fall for this one too.

Minus 8 - Elysian Fields (2000 Compost)

The Swiss producer Robert Jan Meyer AKA Minus 8 was not new to electronic breakbeats, but Elysian Fields differs remarkably from his debut Beyond Beyond (I will post it sometimes soon). While the drum loops stay basically the same, he doesn't hesitate to exploit all the great effects delivered with Fender Rhodes, and the accoustic guitars and vocals add warmth and sweetness to this collection of rather uptempo tracks. I decided to add The Amalgamation Of Soundz remix of Snowblind because I'm loving it and I think you're going to love it too.

Beanfield - Human Patterns (1999 Compost)

The second Beanfield album Human Patterns marked a start of a whole new era for Compost Records. As the label slowly became a synonymum for emerging nu jazz style, the sound quality improved and the covers were suddenly cool-looking. The Season (with first appearence of now praised poet/singer Bajka) was a huge hit and the album was full of high energy breakbeat jazz. Take Catalpa with that massive wall of samba school percussions or Enchanting Signs, which sounds like Airto on speed. IMHO the best Compost release ever.

In the 90's, there were some English-speaking German hip hop artists that gained some rep (Da Germ, Otropic Three, Asiatic Warriors) and then there were some who did not. Knowtoryus sadly belong to that second group and their only album Covert Operation would pass unnoticed if it wasn't produced by Jan Krause & Michael Reinboth AKA Beanfield. No info on the rappers crew though. Those who know Knowtoryus from Kruder & Dorfmeister Bomberclad Joint sessions may be surprised that all the three gorgeous remixes originate in a 30 seconds long skit.

We didn't have a good Compost release here in a while so it's Compost Day today. Glücklich is a collection of easy listening jazz-funk tracks with a scent of Brazil. While some names are quite well known (Kitty Winter, Klaus Doldinger), sometimes you have to take a closer look to find famous jazzmen under such monikers as Sunbirds (Fritz Pauer, Klaus Weiss, Philip Catherine) or Catch Up (Charly Antolini). This fine set of latin percussions and Fender pianos was compiled by Rainer Trüby (A Forest Mighty Black, Trüby Trio) and was the first long-player released on Compost.

DJ Q's second album TwentyFour7even brings more tech house fun and also more music thanks to Outside's Matt Cooper who added some funky keys on 3 tracks. My favs though are the breakbeat exercise Halls Message and the dark downtempo soundscape The End Of The Beginning already known from Elvis Never Meant Shit To Me.

TwentyFour7even was the last long-player released on Filter. The collection is complete with the exception of FILT029 Still Dancing On John Wayne's Head. There's still about 100 posts left before I'll be allowed to grab it from globalnoises and deliver it to you. Paul Flynn AKA DJ Q knows a lot about knob twiddling and isn't afraid to use it. We Are One with all that filtering was a total floorfiller but his debut album goes far beyond that. Just listen to the techno lament She'll Be Gone and you'll see how much emotions you can put into a house groove. All those loops and bleeps are sometimes too much for my ears but Face The Music is still pretty acceptable for a 14-years old tech house album.

I must say that my musical memory failed me badly and I apologize to Sunship for accusing them of producing garage house creations. Unlike their second album (which definitely IS a garage house creation), their debut sounds more like a breakbeat pop creation with inevitable presence of kitschy female voice. This platter will please those who liked those FM-fied drum'n'bass albums that appeared in the same time, starting with Baby D and ending with Breakbeat Era. Big hug goes to Tonegent for his VBR rip and to milola for his 320kbps m4a's, which I decided to post in the end.

This eponymous debut album by the aptly named duo Mark Hartbottle & Jean-Claude Thompson AKA The Amalgamation Of Soundz is another ear-pleaser. Take the best breakbeats of all tempos, add some funky keys, a scent of trancy synths, bake until ready and serve chilled... Too bad these guys released so little after their second Filter album Part II (coming soon), but their compilations, DJ sets and remixes are also cool. I'm thinking more and more about putting their post-Filter material together as another Future Vintage Exclusive.

Here comes the first Filter compilation, more of a label showcase than a conceptual set like the 1998 Elvis Never Meant Shit To Me. The sealed yellow digipack (yes, you've had to destroy it to get inside) contains a collection of early Filter singles. My favs are Ashley Beedle's remix of Sunship's The 13Th Key, the Pressure Drop remix of The Fire This Time (not on that damned album, see previous post) and one of a handful of original tracks produced by my favourite drum'n'bass couple The Underwolves. What's also remarkable is the original version of Offshore by Chicane, before it's updated version became a balearic classic. Chicane never released anything on Filter and this track was licensed probably just to raise sales, as well as Faze Action remix of D*Note, previously released on Dorado.

First, let me explain why it took me so long to get started posting my Filter Records collection. The thing is, I was pretty damn sure I've got ALL Filter albums somewhere in my boxes. But, after some hours of rummaging through piles of dusty CDs, I must've admitted that there's something missing. Actually both Sunship albums and, what's more painful, Still Dancing On John Wayne's Head, the perfect collection of remixes of otherwise rather forgettable Dancing On John Wayne's Head by The Fire This Time.

I could easily live on and never hear those Sunship garage house creations again (the weakest stuff on Filter, IMHO) but The Fire This Time really hurts. So I tried to g**gle it up and found this funny little forum, globalnoises.org, and there it was! I was sooo happy! I've registered and my jaw dropped to the floor... To get a 320kbps copy of the album, I'm supposed to post 200 (yes, two hundred, it's not a typo) albums first. For comparison, the second Sunship album, which is also to be found there, is worth 30 posts. So instead of entertaining you my dear readers with the cool Filter stuff, I'm working at the coalmine, blimey, globalnoises. But s**t ain't that easy! The guys who run the forum probably see themselves as some kind of pirated music illuminati and one has to be promoted after 10 posts, then after 30 and then.. So I expect to have it finished sometimes around year 2525 or so...

What's the point of all this whining? There seem to be people on the net who do not hesitate to flog others like slaves just for running a server with a piece of out-of-the-box software and even have the guts to ask for donations! What their users get in return is what you get here and on others blogs with minimal hassle. Don't you kids just love me and other bloggers? Well you definitely should have. It's a jungle out there.

On the other hand I must say I love you, especially when you write and offer to share your collections with me. There's not much Future Vintage music that I don't already have so most of the time I have to kindly say thanks but no. To spare you valuable time, I've put together quite comprehensive list of requests which can be found in the comments section of this post. If you spend a minute reading through it and have some of those hard-to-finds and are willing to donate them, I'll love you even more;-)

I promise to post first three Filter platters tomorrow instead of pointless yaking. But the first Sunship album is still missing anyway, so if you happen to have it, share with me and help to complete the Dorado / Filter saga.

Akwaaba could as well come with a subtitle African Head Charge for beginners. No, really, if you didn't know Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah and his crew by now, this is a good starter before you dig deeper into their On-U Sound classics. Recorded in Ghana, mixed in London, released on Acid Jazz, all that furious nyabinghi drumming, fat bass lines and broken english chants are there, only slightly lighter and more funky than the usual gloomy claustrophobic Adrian Sherwood production. And if this isn't "acid jazz not acid jazz", then what is?

I guess there's no need to introduce Galliano, one of the acid jazz main icons. After two classic and truly style-setting albums, the Rob Gallagher crew had to adapt to market's ever changing moods and tranform their party jazz into something.. different. Mixing jazz with late 60's folk chants and activist lyrics didn't prove to raise the sales, but, however underrated by the real jazzheads, The Plot Thickens is still brilliant collection of great songs. So brilliant I actually bought a retail copy in a pawn shop last autumn, and trust me, I don't buy CDs for no reason.

Before I start the promised Filter Records series, let me fulfill one more lovely request I received from Poland - to post some more "acid jazz not acid jazz" albums, probably in the vein of Disco Not Disco compilations. Well I've had a couple of such albums in my head anyway so here they are...

Sandals were short-lived combo based on rhythm section of Ian Simmonds on bass (aka Juryman, I'm going to post some of his albums sometimes soon) and valued session drummer Will Blanchard. They started in 1992 with a single on Acid Jazz, just in time to be signed to a dance branch of major label, ffrr. However, to produce Rite To Silence took more time than the label desired, and when it finally appeared in 1994, the acid jazz movement was a history. More interesting is a list of collaborators (like the electronic duo Leftfield, that produced 3 tracks) and appearences by original members of Jamiroquai or The Brand New Heavies. I only wish there was instrumental version available because all that activist ranting oh so correct in 1994 is just too much in 2011.

FV EXCLUSIVE: Manics vs @440 - The Stealth Sonic Orchestra Sessions 1994-1998

The readers of Future Vintage already know I'm sucker for great remix collections. But what if there are some cool remixes that for whatever reason will never be released on an album? Well, then it's time for me to dig deep in the piles of singles and compilations and to release such collection on my own, in custom-made cover of course. Enjoy the first of the Future Vintage remix collections and stay tuned for more to follow.

Some of you may remember The Stealth Sonic Orchestra as an alter ego of big beat supergroup Apollo 440, which served the only purpose - to ease the pressure of the massive breakbeats and sampled guitars on @440 albums, significantly on their 2003 swan song Dude Descending A Staircase, where the SSO tracks filled almost half of the playing time. Less known is the fact that in the 90s, The Stealth Sonic Orchestra produced about ten remixes, 9 of which accompanied the hit singles of another supergroup - Manic Street Preachers. Although the Manics' refrain-oriented songs are pompous enough themselves, the SSO treatments, based on heavily sampled strings and orchestral percussions, added even more cinematic width, and the results are wonderfull. I've never been much of a Manics fan but I truly enjoyed every one of the tracks. I wish you the same experience.

Les Gammas - Exercices De Styles (2000 Compost)

Exercices De Styles, the sole album by german duo Les Gammas, is my most favourite gem from The Golden Age Of Compost (closely followed by Human Patterns by Beanfield and Elysian Fields by Minus 8) and although I must've heard it thousand times, it was fun to play it again. Complex breakbeats, catchy Rhodes-driven tunes, cool vocals.. anything you might want from a perfect jazz album. It's 11 years old now and still some of the tracks keep poping up on lounge and nujazz compilations every now and then. A typical piece of rare groove for a generation of today's toddlers.

Poke - Sassy (1996 Substance / Stereo Deluxe)

I like to fulfill difficult request and this one drove me really nuts. I was sure that the album has to be somewhere but for whatever reason I was also sure it was released on INFRAcom! Blimey! In the end I had to consult the almighty Discogs to find out it actually has to be in the Stereo Deluxe box, dedicated to another great german label, home of such artists as Jaffa, Mo'Horizons or Moodorama. Another difficulty I've had searching it by the cover. Stereo Deluxe used to give away promo stuff in those handy paper sleeves with the actual cover art but although they repacked the album to match the label's corporate identity, they released the promo with the original Substance Records minimalistic artwork (as seen above) with white backside and only tiny artist and album title printed on the disc. I only hope the whole effort was worth it and you'll enjoy this scandinavian trip hop gem as much as I had when I finally found it.

Karma - Thrillseekers (1999 Groove Attack)

Everytime I've found another request for Thrillseekers I was wondering what's so great about it. I even played it more than once but it doesn't get any better - just a collection of mediocre percussive uptempo tracks, too Compost-ish in one way and not enough Compost-ish in another. Sure there are some bouncy latino singles but that makes a good party, not a good album. I said it in January and I say it again - they've never been better than on Pad Sounds.

Alive and moving

What? Two months gap? Never happenned in the 26 months history of Future Vintage...

The reason is quite simple - my lease on a flat I really liked, finally but unexpectedly expired and I've had to find me a new place called home. To find an ideal flat takes time which I didn't have so I had to settle for one not perfect but okay. You know the rest of the story which means to pack the last 20 years of my life into cardboard boxes (not mentioning my gigantic indoor plants and a bunch of animals), then find them more or less damaged by the moving crew, then find out that half of my furniture won't fit anywhere and - that's the point of the story -decide that the new flat has so many hidden flaws that I have to move on sooner than much later...

I'm in the process of looking for new place right now so there's some time for a couple of posts before the hell breaks loose again. This time I'm not asking if there are any readers left because your comments and request kept coming all the time and I'm very grateful for them. So grateful that although the whole moving operation left me almost penniless, I managed (with help of all three my brave donators) to extend my RS account to keep the files in place. So why don't I post some of the most requested albums today?

Genf - Import / Export (1997 Compost)

One more from the early days of Compost Records. Genf was one-off project consisting of three producers which is why Import/Export sounds more like a compilation of like minds. Guitars and bleeps, clicks and live drums. Though the album doesn't work as a whole, Aachen-Brüssel and Import/Export are pretty cool tracks, so it's worth listening. I've also added Aachen-Brüssel (Hans Nieswandt Whirlpool Remix) as a bonus track.

1995 was extremely good year for timeless debuts. There were albums I used to spin frequently, DJ Cam, Earthling, Morcheeba, Red Snapper, Rockers Hi-Fi, to name just a few. Music For Space Tourism Vol. 1 used to be my favourite downtepo album back then and it's still good today. Laid back beats, relaxed basslines and some cool samples and keys, too. Visit Venus returned some three years after with lovely The Endless Bummer album but the innocence was gone so that's another story.

Homegrown - Unfazed / Mermaid (1999 Mole Listening Pearls)

Homegrown was a one-off project conceived by Beanfield founding member Tobias Meggle after he and Compost Records head honcho Michael Reinboth left the band. The split must have been far from friendly because this double appeared not on Compost as one would expect but on prolific Manheim-based label Mole Listening Pearls, home to such projects as De-Phazz, Nor Elle and JFC. While Mermaid contains typical late 90s trip hop with vocals by Antoinette Teurlinckx, Unfazed is a collection of enhanced instrumental versions, a perfect downtempo musical wallpaper. I remember one early morning in 2000, open-air party on an abandonned airstrip, sun slowly rising and Richard Dorfmeister playing Parchment Planet to an exhausted crowd. I'll remember that moment always.

Brooklyn Funk Essentials - Make Them Like It (2000 Dorado)

Make Them Like It? They couldn't pick a better title. File under Obsolete. This UK issue of the third Brooklyn Funk Essentials album is sadly Dorado's last 1990s long-player I own.

There's a lot of interesting Dorado stuff I've never had (Outside's fourth album Suspicious or the eponymous album by Cleveland Watkiss' Project 23), have lost a long time ago (A.P.E.'s brilliant album Striplight), plus a couple of those that fall off the timeframe of this blog (Outside's last album Out Of The Dark from 2001 or Natalie Walker's debut Urban Angel). Perhaps you could check your garage, cellar or attic and come up with the missing releases, but until then... Wait, there's always Dorados's prodigal offspring, Filter, as important for 90s breakbeat scene as Dorado was for acid jazz heads. Coming soon so stay tuned!

Jhelisa - Language Electric (1997 Dorado)

Jhelisa's second album is disappointing, to say the least. In fact it's a sellout. There's no way to compare it to Galactica Rush since this album lacks everything that made Jhelisa a true acid jazz diva - energy, passion and feeling. What's left is a bunch of poorly stitched songs halfway between bar jazz and weak r'n'b, with dull instrumentation and depressive vocals. An afternoon rehearsal of a bar band, stools on the tables and bartender polishing glasses, that's the only impression on my mind. I have to admit I slept on this album back in 1997 which from today's POV seems to be the correct attitude.

Outside - Discoveries (1997 Dorado)

The Blogger timequake seems to be over, all posts are in correct spacetime continuum, no damage done, so let's move on and finish the Dorado saga.
Despite the silly cover art, Discoveries became my fav Outside album simply because it is instrumental. These eight soundscapes made of solid beats, dark ambience and a sense for drama create a true electronic jazz masterpiece. Not a weak moment here. Enough words, try it and stay tuned!

FLAC, FAQs and Jason's c**k

Yes, as you may have noticed, this blog became kinda stale waters in the last weeks. But no, the author of these pages, who happens to be me, has not yet finished his opus. I just got succumbed by a maelstroem of accidents and incidents only life can stir about. I have fought entropy bravely while the whole universe was coming down on me heavy, which in the end sucked me off any energy I could have left for blogging.

Anyway, Future•Japan Relief Campaign went extremely well from my POV. The 20 or so posts generated about 1700 downloads until now. I have no idea how much money got collected. My secret wish is 1$ collected per download. As for those who just grabbed the files as usual: Your karma knows where you live. Expect it knocking on your door anytime soon.

Now let's go briefly through some issues that appear frequently in your emails and comments:

Comments moderation or Why my comments never appear on the blog?
I was forced to moderate comments some months ago when The Yellow Menace flooded my comments sections with paragraphs of spilled tea pointing to poorly disguised hoax-or-worse websites in god-forgotten countries. It caused the flood to stop then and saved my dear time I spent going through posts and cleaning up. Since then I filter out only two types of comments - gimme-gimmies (please keep on sending your requests, just don't expect them published unless you add some sweet remarks of this blog and its author) and you-sucks (This music blog sucks big hairy hard latin man c**k, and swallows semen, too, wrote Jason ;-). The remaining 10% gets published with reasonable delay.

Genres or not?
Some of you keep asking for genre tags. Please don't. I love the music I share with you just because it blends the genre boundaries, because it contains many genres or none at all. Future Vintage is a memorabilia blog, you'll hardly find something new or unexpected here. For those who don't remember those days and are not satisfied with the hints in accompanying short texts, there's always Discogs...

Why FLAC sucks?
Some of you keep asking for FLAC instead of MP3. Please don't. That will never happen. Why?
Reason 1: FLAC as we know it today is still a marginal format that lacks major support. None of my many MP3-playing electronic devices can handle it, except my computer. Why bother? I understand the need for lossless format when it comes to classical or accoustic music, none of which appears on this blog. Why bother? Besides, if you live in a big city or if you wear headphones on the street often, your numb ears probably won't know the difference. Why bother?
Reason 2: Let me tell you this story: I'm a cold war kid from a country behind the iron curtain. When I was young and music-hungry, the records from the free world were rare as diamonds. We used to share them in circles of trusted friends. Scratch it and you're out. A friend with good tape recorder (Dolby C of course;-) and time and will to tape the new stuff for you was a treasure. Remember, taping records happened in real time. To tape a 90 minute cassette, one had actually to pause the tape and flip the record several times. Musically, I lived off the tapes for the most part of my youngster years and later I never hesitated to do the same favor for others. When digital media blew the spot, it only allowed me to do the favor for more people; on FTP's, Limewire, Soulseek and finally here.
Shortly - I take MP3s as today's equivalent of a cassette, a practical format for sharing among friends that contains all the information while keeping a reasonable distance from the source material. If you love the music, an HQ MP3 will give all the joy. If you love the sound of your voice while rambling about compression and algorhythms, why don't you just buy the original and leave us alone?
Anyway I added some of my fav FLAC blogs in my blogroll including The Stroboscope Syndrome where you can find lossless versions of some of my posts.

Future Vintage invited the 123.456th visitor last weekend. Let me tell you the prospects for achieving 234.567th or more are bleak. Future Vintage still lives off the donations collected by the late The CTI Never Sleeps. As there wasn't a single donation during the two years of Future Vintage, I have just enough rapids to keep my gigantic Rapidshare account going for next 3 months. And then? Who knows. Boobies or not, Kylie Minogue sells. This simple marketing axiom caused the fact that this not so interesting song with her weak voice-over became Towa's greatest hit. This remix EP contains the title song treated by The Gentle People, Shy FX and Krust, and also BMT featuring Biz Markie and Mos Def remixed by my fav turntablist SP-1200. My copy doesn't contain the original German Bold Italic font issued with the japanese release (it was in obsolete pfm/pfb format anyway), so I added a truetype version from my font collection.

Towa Tei - Stupid Fresh (1997)

How could I forget Towa Tei, the prototype of crazy japanese deejay who was behind Dee-Lite's Groove Is In The Heart, a monster of a song that was to the 90s what Pump Up The Volume was to the 80s. But as I considered his 90s solo albums too FM-friendly for this blog, I had to dig deeper for some real gems.
Stupid Fresh was 7-track collection of fine house and d'n'b remixes accompanying the release of Towa's second album Sound Museum. It was released separately in Japan, however this rip comes from the 1998 German reissue so that Towa's remix for EnVogue got chopped out due to licensing problems.

I have no idea who Osamu Sato is or whatever happenned to him lately but his website (last updated 2001) suggests he might not be a musician at all. All that's left is this post-YMO proto-IDM album produced by Ryuichi Sakamoto and then remixed beyond recognition by such experts as Wagon Christ (typical mix for cash though) and The Future Sound Of London (a must-hear with rich ISDN-esque sound). By any means the ugliest cover in my collection.

So here comes the original masterpiece of japanese electronica. Released without applause on local Lollop label in 1996, then licensed to prestigious (but sooo shortlived) Clear label in London, probably the best home to such a monolith of ice-cold electrojazz back then. I remember some review that said something like "the best jazz session ever played by robots", which I guess sez it all for those who still try to convince me to add genre tags to my posts. Can't believe that this, one As One album and Jedi Knights 12'' (you know which one, don't you) is all that's left of my Clear collection, so if you have any Jake Slazenger, Gregory Fleckner Quintet or Metamatics, you are welcome to share with us.
